Libby Slate knew from age five that she would be a writer. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she also gravitated early to the entertainment industry. Becoming a freelance entertainment and arts journalist, then, was less a matter of choosing a career than fulfilling a passion.
All those years of doing homework in front of the TV set paid off: Libby regularly writes about television for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Emmy magazine, emmys.com and emmys.tv. Being enchanted from childhood by the wonders of Rodgers and Hammerstein has also stood her in good stead: She covers musicals, plays, dance, symphony orchestras, opera and other performing arts for Performances magazine and musicals and cabaret for the Orange County Performing Arts Center and ocpac.org.
Libby has contributed more than 300 articles to the Los Angeles Times, including two columns, “It’s a Living,” about TV behind the scenes, and “Local Hero,” spotlighting unsung heroes in Southern California. Her other entertainment credits include TV Guide, DGA Quarterly, Soap Opera Digest, Performing Arts, Inside Film and souvenir programs for the Emmy Awards, People’s Choice Awards and other shows.
Having begun her professional career with Skating magazine, Libby has interviewed such stars as Dorothy Hamill, Brian Boitano, Scott Hamilton and Kristi Yamaguchi. Among other topics, she has covered theme parks for Disney Magazine, Live Design and elsewhere, travel for the Los Angeles Times, wellness for Health and luxury lifestyles for Hotel Bel-Air and MGM Grand Air.
An avid photographer, Libby has sold a number of photos to accompany her articles. She sang for many years with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Roger Wagner Chorale, and with other groups has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. She is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the Independent Writers of Southern California.
